Christmas briefing‏

Less than four months left until the start of the first race. Everything but the lazy days. Much work has been done and even much more work waits in the upcoming period. Nice weather helps. If there’s something we can certainly say that is the competitors will have an opportunity to check their skills at different types of terrain and distances, for sure.

Babe Cup (3.4. Friday & 6.4. Monday), 2 x middle distance.

There are many things already said about this hands-made terrain, but no matter how many times we ran, there are always interesting, challenging , different and simple enjoyable orienteering. Lots of competitor’s visits the competition year for year exclusively for running on the Babe again. Pretty “unfriendly” terrain for mapmakers, but we found a group of them “in map they trust”, so they had done a pretty good job with the map. Our empirical experience about way of navigation trough terrain said it is mixture of keeping direction in full speed, “adapting to the changes” skills, focus on details, running uphill and downhill. So, we made it clearly how course will be set up by us and what are you can expect.

Beograd Open (4/5.4. Saturday and Sunday)

Sprint – Like almost all metropolises, Beograd also has great resorts for setting a good sprint race. At the upcoming edition, sprint will be held in one of the most beautiful locations in the city – Cerak Vinogradi. Long time ago, before the settlements was built on this spot, there were vineyards raised. If the settlement’s prettiness and architectonic solution had been inspiring by the wine, that meant the wine certainly was excellent! Symmetric buildings, parks, passages, fences, quick sets, stairs… Courses will be set up with a lot of directions changes, legs to find optimal route-choice and without any tricky controls at the field. Nothing can affect a runner’s pace, that’s our POVs for the good sprint course.

Long – Avala hill* is one of three favorite places for Belgraders when they want to make their escape from beton and loudness into a nature. Avala is more common for physically demanding courses due to the lack of the micro forms and other details. Steep slopes and very well developed road and paths network make it orienteering there all about the running. You can expect one real thought, long distance and long legs with a lot of route-choices, according to basic definition of disciplines.
*Avala hill is the location for two objects that make this hill popular to visit – TV Tower, the highest building on the Balkan with 204,5 meters. A TV tower has a large history, despite it was destroyed during the NATO bombing 1999 and it was built again and reopened for tourist and visitors in a April 2010. It provides beautiful view of Belgrade and Sumadija (region in Central Serbia, southern from the Belgrade). The tower is closed for visitors if the wind blows stronger than 13m per second. Monuments to unknown heroes were built in all allied countries during the years after World War I, and former Yugoslavia joined in this endeavor. The monument was built for four years and it holds the remains of an unknown hero. It is shaped like a sarcophagus on a plinth with six steps. Caryatids line the sides, symbolizing an honor guard.

We hope that we offered to you enough details about what you can expect in Belgrade during the Easter 2015.

Wishing Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all of you!

Bulletin 2, 2014.

March 14th, 2014

A few days more left until “Beograd Open” begins. But, before the Beograd Open, we’ve arranged a new format called “Babe Cup”. Two middle distance. Map “Babe” we were using several years in a row, but it’s also too atractive to hang it hiden from new competitiors as well as our well known and dear sport friends. Unfortunately, “Veliko Igrište” isn’t finished completely and will have to wait for a better time. Next year probably, but let’s see… Košutnjak should be good substitution. But, “Gardoš” is ready – small but very nice area lean on the Danube coast, steep stairs, tight streets, old houses, caffes, crowd all around (peaceful and supportive).

Beograd Open 2014 + Babe Cup

“Beograd Open 2014” will be held at last weekend of March (29/30.3.) and will consist of sprint and long distances. Also, there’ll be brand new terrains and maps, never before used for orienteering.

Old city “Gardoš” is the oldest part of Belgrade and is situated on the coast of Danube.

Old houses from the XIX and XX centuries, narrow streets, stairs and squares are very suitable for interesting sprint courses.

For long distance stage we’ll need to leave Belgrade and get ready to hit the road inside the country. Beautiful carst area called “Veliko Igrište” is same carst type as middle distance terrain for WOC 2012 in Laussane, Swiss.

But, just before the “Beograd Open” (27/28.3.) we’ll organize a warming-up event called “Babe Cup” and arranged two forest stages on a tricky, demanding but still fast terrain with high quality maps.

Stay tuned.
